Abstract

The paper study Psycho-Social Determinants of Crime Reporting in Nigeria.Crime reporting plays a crucial role in the criminal justice system, yet various psycho-social factors influence whether individuals report crimes to law enforcement. In Cross River Central Senatorial District, Nigeria, socio-cultural beliefs, fear of retaliation, trust in the police, and personal psychological experiences shape people's willingness to report criminal activities. Many victims and witnesses hesitate to come forward due to stigma, community norms, or a lack of confidence in the justice system.The major aim of this research is to examinehow does attitude of law enforcement agents affect crime reporting in Cross River Central Senatorial District, and to examine the extent of fear and retaliation in crime reporting in Cross River Central Senatorial District in Nigeria.The study utilizedthe social bond theoryrespectively. The study also adopted survey research design.A total of 410 respondents were selected for the study.but only367 was filled and returned successfully. The study utilized cluster,purposive,andavailabilitysamplingtechniquesinachievingtheresearchoutcomes. Thefindingsofthe study indicated that,there is a significant relationship between psycho-social factors and crime reporting in Cross River Central Senatorial District, Nigeria. The study recommended among others that the police should establish clear, accessible, and anonymous crime reporting channels that can eliminate the fear of retaliation that often deters individuals from reporting crimes. Police departments should implement anonymous tip lines, online reporting systems, and secure in-person options where individuals can feel safe reporting crimes without fear of being identified or targeted.
