There is no gainsaying the fact that the leadership of any society or organization determines the tempo of peace and development within it. Despite the fact that progress within every society is a combined effort of both the leaders and followers, the responsibility of setting the stage for this to happen rests so much on the leadership in-charge at the time. Conflicts and crises do not imply peace rather they are anti-peace. Leadership shapes the trajectory of peace and conflict management, particularly in diverse and complex nations like Nigeria. This paper explores the intricate relationship between leadership styles and their impact on fostering peace or exacerbating conflict within the Nigerian context. It argues that effective leadership, characterized by inclusivity, transparency, and a commitment to justice, is crucial for mitigating conflict drivers such as ethnic tensions, resource scarcity, and socio-economic disparities. Conversely, inept or divisive leadership can undermine peacebuilding efforts and fuel further instability. The paper further investigates how different leadership approaches, ranging from authoritarian to democratic, influence conflict dynamics and peace processes in Nigeria, highlighting the need for visionary leaders who can promote national unity, good governance, and sustainable development to achieve lasting peace.
