Abstract

The paper assesses religious leadership and its impact on peaceful co-existence and nation building in Nigeria.This paper presents an understanding of its impact on peaceful co-existence and nation-building. The paper explores the various ways influence of religious leaders, both positive and negative impacts on Nigerian society. It examines how their actions and pronouncements can either foster interfaith harmony and national unity or exacerbate existing ethnic and religious tensions. Nigeria over the years has been faced with series of religious crisis that affects the peaceful co-existence of the Nigerian people. It investigates the mechanisms through which religious leaders contribute to or detract from constructive civic engagement, responsible governance, and overall national development. The assessment considers the ethical responsibilities inherent in religious leadership and the potential consequences of their exercise or neglect, ultimately seeking to provide insights into strengthening their positive contributions to a peaceful and prosperous Nigeria. It finds that there has been effective in peacebuilding through interfaith dialogues, community mediation, and partnerships with various organizations, especially in conflict-prone areas in Nigeria. But obstacles like political meddling, resource scarcity, and religious prejudice prevent them from reaching their full potential. Using a qualitative approach and document analysis, the study examines sermons, reports, and publications to understand these institutions' contributions. The study comes to the conclusion that while religious institutions play a significant role in promoting peace, more cooperation and assistance are required for long-term peace initiatives.
